Los Angeles: Hawaii Governor Josh Green has declared a statewide emergency as Hurricane Lowell rapidly strengthens over the Pacific, prompting authorities to step up preparations for potential impacts across the Hawaiian Islands.
Hurricane Lowell strengthened back to a Category 4 storm, with sustained winds of around 240 kmph and a central pressure of 926 millibars. The storm was located about 985 km south of Lihue, Hawaii, as of Friday morning local time, according to the US National Hurricane Center.
Lowell had briefly reached Category 5 intensity on Wednesday. The US National Weather Service forecast further strengthening on Friday afternoon as the powerful hurricane moved towards the western Hawaiian Islands.
Hurricane Lowell nears western Hawaii
The latest forecast track indicates that Lowell could remain near major hurricane strength as it moves closer to the western Hawaiian Islands late Monday and Monday night.
Although the storm’s centre is expected to remain offshore, weather impacts could extend far from the hurricane. The National Weather Service warned that high surf and heavy rainfall could affect areas hundreds of miles from the storm’s centre.
Authorities are closely monitoring the hurricane as its forecast track and intensity continue to develop.
Hawaii governor declares statewide emergency
Governor Josh Green signed the emergency proclamation on Thursday, covering the entire state. The measure is intended to support preparations for potential impacts from Hurricane Lowell, Hurricane Karina, Tropical Storm Marie and any additional storms that could affect Hawaii.
The proclamation allows state and county agencies to mobilise personnel, equipment and other resources more quickly.
Hawaii is also continuing its recovery from Tropical Cyclone Lala, adding to the importance of preparations ahead of the approaching storm.
“This proclamation gives our agencies and counties the flexibility to move people, equipment and resources quickly so we can protect communities across every island,” Green said.
He urged residents to remain prepared and continue monitoring official weather updates as Hurricane Lowell approaches.
