Hyderabad Man Dies by Suicide Over Fear of Deletion in SIR

Hyderabad: A 51-year-old man died by suicide allegedly due to fear of his name being deleted in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the possible consequences for his family, including two mentally challenged children.

Under severe mental distress over his name not being found in the 2002 voter list and anomalies in his official documents, Sheikh Mujbil Rehman, a cab driver, hanged himself at his residence in Bharat Nagar, Borabanda, in the early hours of Sunday.

According to family members, he had been deeply worried about the future of his wife and three children, two of whom have intellectual disabilities.

Family Says Document Issues Caused Severe Anxiety

Showing copies of various documents Rehman had prepared, his nephew Imam told the media that he had spent nearly Rs. 1.5 lakh on obtaining and correcting official records. As different spellings of his name appeared in documents such as his Aadhaar card and passport, he had become increasingly anxious about possible legal complications if his name was deleted from the voter list.

Imam said Rehman had been visiting various government offices for the past month to rectify discrepancies in his documents. There were also inconsistencies regarding his date of birth.

Rehman was also unable to locate the names of his parents in the 2002 electoral rolls for mapping purposes, further adding to his anxiety.

The deceased’s family members said he had become mentally distressed after hearing from others about the possible consequences of deletion of names from the voter list.

His wife said he had been under immense stress over the past few days as he was unable to complete the required corrections. He feared that any issues with his documents could result in their two mentally challenged children losing their pension benefits and the family being deprived of other government welfare schemes.

According to her, Rehman woke up around 2 a.m., drank some water and returned to bed. Around an hour later, he woke up again but did not respond when she asked if he was leaving for work. At around 4:30 a.m., their son woke up and raised an alarm after finding his father hanging.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.

Originally from Karnataka, Rehman’s family had settled in Hyderabad nearly three decades ago, before his marriage.

What is the Special Intensive Revision (SIR)?

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is an exercise undertaken by the Election Commission to verify and update electoral rolls. The objective is to ensure that voter lists remain accurate by adding eligible voters, correcting errors in personal details, removing duplicate entries and deleting names of deceased or otherwise ineligible persons.

As part of the exercise, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) conduct door-to-door verification and distribute enumeration forms to registered voters. Electors are required to verify their details and submit the forms along with supporting documents wherever necessary. The exercise is intended to improve the accuracy of electoral rolls before future elections.

SIR Underway Across Telangana

Door-to-door enumeration under the SIR began across Telangana on June 25. According to election authorities, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have distributed over 1,43,17,635 enumeration forms across the state, covering 42.33 per cent of registered voters as of Sunday.

The ongoing revision has generated considerable public attention, with political parties urging citizens to verify their voter details and election officials repeatedly assuring that genuine voters will not be removed if the verification process is completed. The Election Commission has maintained that the exercise is aimed at ensuring an accurate and updated electoral roll.
