Tamil Nadu: A Pilatus PC-7 basic trainer aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed during a routine training mission near the Tambaram air base in Chennai on Friday afternoon, triggering an immediate response from emergency teams and aviation authorities.
The incident occurred at around 2 pm when the aircraft went down in a secluded forested area close to the air base. Fortunately, the pilot was able to eject safely moments before the crash and escaped without any injuries.
Aircraft Was on Routine Training Sortie
According to officials, the aircraft was engaged in a standard training sortie, a common exercise conducted regularly as part of the Indian Air Force’s pilot training curriculum.
The PC-7 Pilatus is one of the primary aircraft used by the IAF to impart basic flying training to cadets, making it an integral part of the Air Force’s training fleet. Its reliability and widespread use mean that any incident involving the aircraft attracts considerable attention from aviation experts and defence authorities.
Court of Inquiry Ordered
In its initial statement, the Indian Air Force confirmed the crash and reassured that the pilot was unharmed.
The force also announced that a Court of Inquiry has been ordered to investigate the cause of the accident, which remains unknown at this stage.
Such inquiries are standard procedure in the aftermath of military aircraft accidents and aim to thoroughly examine technical, mechanical, and operational factors that may have contributed to the crash.
The IAF has not yet released further details regarding the extent of the damage to the aircraft or the precise coordinates of the crash site, although it has been confirmed that the area was cordoned off shortly after the incident to ensure safety and allow investigators to access the wreckage.
Eyewitness Accounts and Emergency Response
Eyewitnesses in the nearby localities reported hearing a loud sound around the time of the crash, though the secluded nature of the forest area prevented any civilian casualties or damage to property.
Emergency response teams, including fire and rescue personnel, rushed to the spot to secure the area and assist the Air Force authorities in managing the aftermath. The safe ejection of the pilot is being viewed as a fortunate outcome, given the potential risks involved in such emergency procedures.
Scrutiny Over the PC-7 Fleet
The PC-7 fleet has long been regarded as dependable, and today’s crash has prompted heightened scrutiny as defence officials and aviation technicians await the findings of the inquiry.
With the aircraft playing a crucial role in the training of future Air Force pilots, ensuring its safety and reliability is of utmost importance.
Further updates from the Air Force are expected once preliminary assessments are completed and more information becomes available regarding the circumstances that led to the accident.
