28 IAS, 9 IPS named poll observers for key states

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has appointed a total of 28 IAS and 9 IPS officers as election observers in poll-bound states, including West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. The move is part of preparations to ensure free, fair, and transparent assembly elections scheduled in multiple states in 2026.

Out of the total appointments, West Bengal has been allocated the highest number of observers, with 17 IAS officers deployed in the state. Tamil Nadu will have 6 IAS officers overseeing the electoral process, while the remaining officers have been assigned to other regions.

West Bengal sees maximum deployment

West Bengal remains a key focus for the Election Commission due to its politically sensitive environment and history of intense electoral contests. The higher number of observers reflects the need for close monitoring and administrative oversight.

The deployment signals the Commission’s intent to maintain strict vigilance and ensure neutrality during the election process.

Tamil Nadu also under close watch

Tamil Nadu, another important poll-bound state, has been assigned 6 IAS officers as observers. These officials will oversee critical aspects such as electoral roll verification, implementation of the Model Code of Conduct, and coordination with local authorities to ensure smooth polling.

The Election Commission has been strengthening preparedness in southern states given the scale and importance of the elections.

Observers to ensure fair conduct
