IELTS student ends her life in Moga; Youth from village accused of harassment

A deeply tragic and shocking incident has emerged from Rode village in the Moga district. A 24-year-old woman ended her life by jumping into a canal, driven to despair by the harassment she faced from a young man from her own village. She took this drastic step after learning that her father had discovered she had not reached her training center. Based on the statement provided by the deceased’s father, the police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against the accused youth.

According to reports, the deceased, Harleen Kaur, had been pursuing a ‘Nanny course’ at the ‘Edition IELTS Center’ in Baghapurana for the past four months. On July 2, she left home for the center as usual. Meanwhile, her father, Sukhmandra Singh (a resident of Rupa Patti, Rode village), had gone to Baghapurana to get his motorcycle repaired. When he arrived at the center to meet his daughter, he was horrified to learn that she had not attended the center that day.

Called her cousin saying—”Father has found out; I am jumping into the canal”

Her father, Sukhmandra Singh, stated that he tried calling his daughter’s mobile phone several times, but she did not answer. He then informed his wife at home. In the meantime, upon returning to the village, his nephew Beant Singh made a shocking revelation: he told them that he had received a call from Harleen. She was extremely distressed and said that her father had found out she hadn’t gone to the center that day, so she was going to jump into the canal.

This call caused panic within the family, and they immediately began searching for Harleen. Late that night, the family received information that Harleen’s body had been found floating in the canal (watercourse) running from village Bhallur to Mahla.

Harassed by a local youth; friend reveals the truth

In his statement to the police, the deceased’s father revealed that one of Harleen’s friends had told his son the whole truth. According to the friend, Harleen had been in contact with a local youth named Yadvir Singh, alias Joga, who was constantly harassing and mentally tormenting her. Harleen feared that her father had discovered her predicament and the fact that she had skipped the center; distressed by this, she jumped into the canal. Her father alleged that Yadvir Singh Joga was solely responsible for his daughter’s death.

Case registered against the accused; investigation underway

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Manjinder Singh of the Samalsar police station stated that a case has been registered against the accused, Yadvir Singh alias Joga, under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) based on the statement of Sukhmandir Singh. The police took possession of the body, had a post-mortem conducted at the Civil Hospital in Moga, and subsequently handed the body over to the family. Raids are being conducted to arrest the accused, and a thorough investigation into the matter is ongoing.
