Tennis: Swiatek Sweeps Past Rybakina in Toronto to Clinch First Title of 2026

Toronto: Iga Swiatek ended her nearly year-long title drought in emphatic fashion, defeating Elena Rybakina 6-2, 6-3 in 75 minutes to win the Canadian Open women’s singles title.

The victory marked Swiatek’s first title of the 2026 season and the 26th of her career. The eighth-ranked Pole had not won a title or reached a final since triumphing in Seoul last September.

Swiatek Claims 12th WTA 1000 Title

Swiatek’s victory also earned her a 12th WTA 1000 title, moving her past Aryna Sabalenka’s 11 for the second-most since the format was introduced in 2009. Only Serena Williams, with 13, remains ahead of her.

The 2026 season had been below Swiatek’s usual standards before Toronto. She had not reached a final, had dropped to No. 8 in the world rankings and was on the fringes of the WTA Finals race.

She defeated four Top 20 opponents on her way to the title — Rybakina, Elina Svitolina, Diana Shnaider and Marta Kostyuk. It was the first time since her 2024 Roland-Garros triumph that she had defeated at least three Top 20 players in a single tournament.

“We all work to have these moments, and for sure I was missing it a little bit. I’m happy at the end; I stayed focused on just grinding and improving because that’s the most important thing,” Swiatek said.

She added that her tennis, physicality and mental preparation had all clicked in Toronto, calling it her best week of the season so far.

Swiatek Completes North American Title Collection

With her Canadian Open triumph, Swiatek has now won all five significant North American titles: Indian Wells (2022, 2024), Miami (2022), US Open (2022), Cincinnati (2025) and Canada (2026).

She is also now three-fourths of the way towards a Career Slam, with the Australian Open remaining the only Grand Slam title missing from her collection.

Swiatek has won eight of the 10 WTA 1000 events, with Dubai and Wuhan the only two tournaments at that level still missing from her trophy cabinet.

Overall, she now has 19 Big Titles, including four Roland-Garros titles, the US Open, Wimbledon, WTA Finals and multiple WTA 1000 crowns.

Rybakina Moves to Top of WTA Race

Despite falling short in the final, Rybakina will move into first place in the WTA race.

The Kazakh leaves Toronto as the season leader in hard-court wins, with 26 victories, and WTA 1000 wins, with 22.
