IMD issues yellow alert in Kerala amid heavy rain forecast

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Kerala, warning of heavy rainfall over the next two days due to a low-pressure system in the northwest Bay of Bengal. Authorities urge residents to stay vigilant as strong winds and intense showers are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The IMD says rainfall of 7–11 mm in 24 hours is very likely at isolated locations in Kerala from August 26 to 28, with northern and central parts predicted to bear the brunt.

On Tuesday, August 26, the yellow alert covers Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. On Wednesday, the alert expands to include Ernakulam in addition to the previously mentioned districts.

The IMD has also warned fishermen against venturing into the seas off the Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep coasts during this period, as winds may reach 40–60 km/h, creating hazardous marine conditions.

Coastal residents have been advised to exercise caution. The state’s disaster management officials have asked local administrations to stay prepared, including setting up relief camps where water levels rise. People are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from waterlogged roads, and follow government safety guidelines.

Kerala had already experienced widespread damage earlier this month from heavy rainfall and strong winds, which uprooted trees, damaged homes, and caused power outages across several districts.

Authorities are concerned about renewed disruptions as the monsoon remains active and the evolving Bay of Bengal system continues to influence rainfall intensity in the state. With yellow alerts in force for both Tuesday and Wednesday, officials emphasize heightened vigilance in the affected districts.
