IMD Issues Orange Alert for Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds in North India Today

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several parts of North India today, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds as a fresh western disturbance impacts the region. The weather department has advised residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather conditions.

Several North Indian States Likely to Witness Intense Weather Activity

According to IMD, states including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi-NCR, and parts of western Uttar Pradesh are expected to experience widespread rainfall and thunderstorms through the day. Gusty winds may reach speeds of 40–50 kmph, while isolated hailstorm activity is also possible in some areas.

Western Disturbance Behind Sudden Weather Change

Meteorologists have attributed the sudden weather shift to an active western disturbance moving across northwest India. The system is interacting with warm surface temperatures, creating favorable conditions for thunderstorm development, lightning, and heavy rain. Such weather systems are common during the pre-monsoon season and often bring abrupt changes after prolonged heat.

Relief From Heatwave, But Risk of Disruptions Remains

While the rainfall is likely to bring temporary relief from rising temperatures and heatwave-like conditions in many northern states, authorities have warned that the severe weather may lead to traffic disruptions, waterlogging, power outages, and damage to crops or weak structures in vulnerable areas.

The IMD has urged people to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid sheltering under trees, unplug electronic appliances during lightning, and follow local administration advisories. Commuters have been advised to monitor weather updates before heading out.
