Imran Khan calls protests, to challenge Toshakhana‑II verdict

Islamabad, Dec 21: Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has appealed to his supporters to prepare for nationwide protests after being convicted in the Tosha Khana‑II corruption case. Khan, currently jailed, also announced his intention to challenge the court’s verdict in the Islamabad High Court, setting the stage for further political turmoil.

 Reaction to Toshakhana‑II Verdict

Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were recently sentenced to 17 years in prison by a special court in the Tosha Khana‑II case, which revolves around alleged corruption related to the under‑invoicing and sale of state gifts. The verdict has sparked strong reactions from his Pakistan Tehreek‑e‑Insaf (PTI) party, which describes the ruling as politically motivated and unconstitutional.

Although the former premier does not currently have access to his social media accounts from jail, his message urging support for protests and legal action was conveyed by his legal team and PTI leaders. Khan has directed PTI officials to mobilize supporters and prepare for a street movement to defend their constitutional rights.

 Legal Challenge Ahead

Alongside calls for protests, Khan has instructed his lawyers to file an appeal against the verdict in the Islamabad High Court. He has criticized the trial process, alleging the verdict was delivered hastily without proper evidence or sufficient opportunity for his defense to be heard. PTI leaders argue that the judiciary’s actions represent a broader pattern of political victimization.

The planned legal challenge is expected to further escalate tensions in Pakistan’s political landscape, with Khan’s supporters mobilizing both on the streets and in the courts.
