Mumbai: Bollywood actor Imran Khan is now preparing to challenge in the Bombay High Court the notice issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) directing him to leave India by October 28.
The actor has been issued a deportation notice for allegedly participating illegally in the recent protest at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan, which demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Why did the FRRO issue the notice?
According to the FRRO’s order, Imran Khan is accused of violating the law governing foreigners by participating in the protest. Imran is not an Indian citizen, but holds Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) status. Action has been taken against him on this basis.
According to reports, Imran Khan is considering filing a writ petition in the Bombay High Court against the FRRO’s notice. He has appointed MZM Legal LLP as his legal representative in this matter. Zulfiqar Memon, managing partner of MZM Legal, was asked for comment, but declined to comment at this time.
Imran Khan was detained during a protest on October 10th
Imran Khan was detained by police on October 10th in connection with a protest at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan. The protesters were demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. A few days later, the actor was issued a notice to leave India.
According to the official’s order, action has been taken against Imran under sections 7 and 29 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act. The actor has also received a copy of the notice. He is accused of participating in such a protest despite not being an Indian citizen.
Kirit Somaiya demands issuance of LOC
BJP leader and former MP Kirit Somaiya has also demanded action in this matter. On October 13, he contacted the Union Home Ministry and immigration officials, requesting the issuance of a Look Out Circular (LOC) against Imran Khan.
In a letter to Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan on October 13, Somaiya requested the Home Ministry to issue instructions prohibiting the actor from traveling abroad under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. He also demanded that the Bureau of Immigration issue a LOC against Imran and inform the police if he attempts to leave India.
Somaiya also requested that the actor not be allowed to leave the country until the investigation of his complaint and the investigation into the matter involving the Mumbai Police is complete.
This entire matter came to light following a protest at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10. Participants in this protest demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
