Islamabad: Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered former Prime Minister Imran Khan to be shifted from jail to a private hospital amid concerns over his health.
The court has directed that the 73-year-old Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder be moved from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital within 48 hours. He is expected to remain at the hospital until September 16 for medical treatment and monitoring.
Khan has been imprisoned at Adiala Jail since 2023 and is facing several cases. His party has repeatedly alleged that authorities have restricted his access to family members and party colleagues and have not provided adequate medical care for his health issues, including an eye condition.
PTI seeks treatment under personal doctors
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said Khan’s health should be treated seriously and that his medical treatment should be conducted under the supervision of his personal doctors.
Speaking to reporters outside the Supreme Court in Islamabad, Afridi also called for Khan’s family to be allowed to remain involved in his treatment.
Afridi said his party did not want to politicise Khan’s health and claimed that the former prime minister had never used his health as a means to seek relief.
Afridi warns of nationwide protests
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister also warned that public frustration over Khan’s continued imprisonment could escalate.
Afridi said he could see a “spark of revolution” among the country’s youth and warned that the situation could become difficult to control.
His remarks came a day after he threatened nationwide protests if Khan was not allowed to meet PTI colleagues who were scheduled to visit him in jail this week.
Afridi said PTI parliamentarians would visit Adiala Jail on Thursday and warned that the country could witness large-scale protests if the meeting was prevented.
He also participated in a sit-in outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday, where he said growing public anger could eventually make reconciliation efforts difficult.
The Supreme Court’s order to shift Khan to hospital comes amid continuing political tensions surrounding his imprisonment and demands from his party for better medical access and meetings with family members and party leaders.
