India and Afghanistan to Clash at HPCA Stadium Dharamshala on June 13

Following the thrilling encounters of the IPL, the International Cricket Stadium in Dharamshala is now gearing up for another major fixture. On June 13, the first match of the ODI series between India and Afghanistan will be played here. In preparation for this, the HPCA has intensified its efforts; notably, the pitch is being prepared not for a T20 contest, but specifically for a full 100-over match.

Sunil Chauhan, the HPCA’s experienced pitch curator, is preparing the pitch under a new strategy, keeping the requirements of an ODI match firmly in mind. Recently, in addition to three league matches, a playoff qualifier was also hosted at the Dharamshala Stadium. Three different pitches located in the center of the square were utilized for these fixtures. All those pitches were curated to suit the demands of T20 cricket—designed to assist batsmen in scoring runs rapidly and to provide spectators with the thrill of watching boundaries and sixes.

However, the conditions for the upcoming ODI match will be different. In this 50-over-a-side contest, the role of the bowlers will be just as crucial as that of the batsmen. Consequently, the pitch is being prepared in a manner that offers a slight advantage to fast bowlers during the initial overs, while allowing batsmen to play their shots freely later in the innings.

Spin bowlers are also expected to receive some assistance during the middle overs. The Dharamshala Stadium is renowned for its pristine outfield, brisk winds, and the magnificent ambiance created by its mountainous surroundings. The pitch here is often considered challenging for players due to its inherent bounce and pace. This upcoming match between India and Afghanistan is set to be a major attraction for cricket enthusiasts.

HPCA Secretary Manuj Sharma stated that, following the conclusion of the IPL, the HPCA’s entire focus has now shifted to ensuring the successful hosting of this international ODI match. Preparations regarding spectator amenities, security arrangements, and the teams’ practice sessions are proceeding continuously at the stadium. Simultaneously, the pitch itself is being meticulously prepared to align with the requirements of the ODI format, thereby ensuring the match is conducted in accordance with the standards of 50-over cricket.
