Second India-Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting to Be Held in New Delhi Today

The second India-Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is being held in New Delhi today and will be co-chaired by India and the United Arab Emirates. Foreign Ministers from Arab League member states, along with the Arab League Secretary-General, are participating in the meeting.

This is the first time India is hosting the India-Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, with representatives from all 22 Arab nations in attendance. Ahead of the ministerial-level talks, the 4th India-Arab Senior Officials’ Meeting took place in the national capital yesterday.

The ministerial meeting is being convened after a gap of ten years. The inaugural meeting was held in Bahrain in 2016, where the ministers identified five key areas of cooperation—economy, energy, education, media and culture. The current meeting is expected to build upon these foundations by further strengthening and expanding India-Arab cooperation.

India-Arab trade currently exceeds 240 billion dollars, with hydrocarbon trade accounting for over 107 billion dollars—nearly half of the total bilateral trade. India sources more than 95 percent of its LPG, 60 percent of LNG and 47 percent of its crude oil requirements from Arab League countries, along with over 50 percent of its fertilisers and related products. A large portion of India’s external trade also transits through critical maritime routes such as the Suez Canal, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

Indian companies have made significant investments in the energy sector across several Arab countries, including Oman, the UAE, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan, South Sudan, Algeria, Libya and Morocco. The partnership between India and Arab nations spans multiple sectors, including food and energy, financial services, health and education, information technology, renewable energy, start-ups and major infrastructure projects. More than nine million members of the Indian diaspora reside in Arab League countries.
