India has condemned the attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz as “unacceptable.” India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Parvathaneni Harish, said that targeting civilian ships and their crews cannot be justified under any circumstances.
India’s Statement at the United Nations
Parvathaneni Harish made this statement at a special meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, which discussed the security of global energy and supply chains.
He said that maintaining freedom of navigation on maritime routes is crucial, as it impacts the world’s energy supply.
Attack on Indian Ship near Oman
India’s statement comes at a time when an Indian-flagged commercial ship was recently attacked off the coast of Oman. The ship was coming from Somalia.
Omani authorities safely rescued all 14 crew members on board. However, the perpetrators of the attack have not yet been identified.
Concerns rise due to West Asia tensions
The attack on May 13th occurred amid rising tensions in West Asia. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most vital maritime trade routes, carrying approximately 20 percent of the world’s energy supply.
According to reports, at least two other Indian-flagged ships have also been attacked this year as regional conflicts escalated.
