India Denounces Trump’s ‘Hellhole’ Remark

New Delhi: India has strongly condemned the “hellhole” remark shared by former US President Donald Trump, calling the comments inappropriate and inconsistent with the spirit of India-US relations. The controversy erupted after Trump reposted a statement on social media containing the derogatory reference to India in the context of the US immigration debate.

MEA Calls Remark ‘Uninformed and In Poor Taste’

Reacting to the controversy, the Ministry of External Affairs said the comments were “uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste.” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that such remarks do not reflect the reality of the relationship between India and the United States, which is based on mutual respect and shared strategic interests.

Trump Shared Comment During Immigration Debate

The controversial remark was originally made by conservative commentator Michael Savage in criticism of US birthright citizenship policies. Trump reposted the statement on his social media platform without adding any personal comment, but the repost triggered widespread backlash in India.

Opposition Demands Stronger Response

The issue has also sparked political reactions within India, with opposition leaders urging the central government to raise the matter formally with the United States and strongly object to the remark. Critics said the statement insulted the dignity of every Indian.

Diplomatic Focus on Maintaining Ties

Despite the controversy, officials stressed that India-US ties remain strong and strategic, with both countries continuing cooperation across trade, defence, and global diplomacy. The US Embassy in New Delhi has also sought to ease tensions by reiterating Trump’s previous praise for India.
