India steady amid energy crisis, no lockdown or rationing

Even as several countries grapple with fuel shortages, rationing, and emergency measures due to the ongoing global energy crisis, India has managed to remain stable without imposing lockdowns or restricting fuel access.

According to government sources, the country’s strong energy infrastructure, diversified import strategy, and proactive policy measures have helped maintain uninterrupted supply of petrol, diesel, and LPG across regions.

No lockdown, no rationing: Government clarifies

Amid widespread rumours on social media about a possible lockdown or fuel rationing, the Centre has categorically dismissed such claims. Officials have stated that there is no proposal under consideration for a nationwide lockdown due to the energy crisis.

Union ministers have reassured citizens that fuel supplies remain adequate and there is no need for panic. The government also warned against misinformation, calling it harmful and unnecessary during a sensitive global situation.

    Strong reserves ensure supply security

India currently has sufficient energy reserves to handle disruptions in global supply chains. Official data indicates that the country has around 60 days of fuel stock, with total reserve capacity reaching up to 74 days.

Additionally, crude oil procurement for the coming weeks has already been secured, ensuring continuity of supply. Strategic petroleum reserves and steady imports from over 40 global suppliers have further strengthened the country’s energy security.

    Refineries operating at peak capacity

Another key factor behind India’s stability is the efficient functioning of its refineries. All major refineries are currently operating at over 100% capacity, ensuring that domestic demand is met without disruptions.

Increased domestic production, especially of LPG, has reduced dependence on imports and improved supply resilience. The country is also receiving additional shipments from multiple international sources, further stabilizing availability.

Government steps to prevent price shock

To shield citizens from the impact of rising global crude oil prices, the government has taken several fiscal measures. These include reducing excise duties on fuel and imposing export controls to ensure domestic availability.

Officials have emphasized that the government is absorbing part of the financial burden to prevent a sharp rise in fuel prices for consumers.

    Tackling misinformation and panic buying

Authorities have also addressed concerns about panic buying and long queues at petrol pumps in certain areas. Officials clarified that such incidents were largely driven by misinformation rather than actual shortages.

Oil companies have increased credit limits for fuel stations and ensured round-the-clock operations of depots to maintain adequate supply levels.

India’s diversified energy strategy pays off

India’s ability to withstand the global energy crisis is being attributed to its diversified sourcing strategy. The country imports crude oil from over 41 suppliers worldwide, reducing dependence on any single region.

This approach has helped offset disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions, particularly in West Asia, which have impacted global energy markets.

    A contrast to global challenges

While several nations are facing fuel shortages, rationing, and even restrictions on energy usage, India has avoided such extreme measures. The country’s stable supply chain and preparedness have ensured that daily life remains largely unaffected.
