The United States’ top trade official, Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, said India “comes out on top” in the landmark India–European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Greer noted that the pact appears to tilt in New Delhi’s favour, primarily by offering wider access to the vast European market and potential labour mobility benefits for Indian workers.
The ambitious trade agreement described by Indian and EU leaders as the “mother of all deals” was finalised after nearly two decades of negotiations and covers a combined market of nearly two billion people. It aims to significantly reduce tariffs on goods, enhance cooperation on trade and economic issues, and deepen strategic ties between India and the 27-nation European bloc.
Greer highlighted that under the agreement, India stands to secure greater market access into Europe a benefit that could fuel exports for key Indian sectors such as textiles, leather goods, pharmaceuticals, engineering products, and more. He also pointed to potential immigration or mobility provisions that could ease movement for Indian professionals, students, or workers across Europe, though details remain to be clarified.
Greer’s comments underscored shifting global trade dynamics. He suggested that Europe’s pursuit of diversified trade partners partly influenced by higher tariff policies in the United States has created new opportunities for India to expand access to European markets. According to him, this may catalyse a period of enhanced economic engagement between India and the EU.
