Recently, when India’s GDP and product growth figures were released, they surprised India’s opposition parties more than the world. The figures showed that India’s GDP growth rate in the first quarter of 2026-27 was 7.8 percent, compared to 6.9 percent in the first quarter of the previous year.
Critics voiced strong opposition, supported by former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan and former Finance Secretary Subhash Chandra. They questioned how India’s growth rate could be so high when the US-Iran war has disrupted supply chains from Gulf countries, and most countries are experiencing declining growth rates, along with an energy crisis and inflation.
Questions were raised about the reliability of the data. Modi completely brushed aside this criticism in his statements. But now the International Monetary Fund has validated India’s GDP estimates. The IMF has declared India’s calculations of GDP growth accurate. Thus, the Indian government’s claims of economic growth have gained credibility. IMF expert Julie Kozak stated that the Indian economy has maintained its strength despite the energy crisis and other global challenges. India’s services sector has emerged strongly during this period. India has improved its exports, which is why the growth rate of 7.8 percent in the April-June quarter exceeded experts’ expectations.
The truth is that despite the shocks from high energy and commodity prices due to the West Asian crisis, India remains the world’s fastest-growing economy, and its GDP has reflected this growth. It was also reported that the country’s foreign exchange account received $45 billion in a week, further strengthening India’s external strength.
RBI data shows that as of September 4th, our foreign exchange reserves reached a record high of $785.7 billion, up from $740.8 billion a week earlier. Non-resident Indian deposits accounted for $127 billion of this. All these development initiatives are excellent, doubling the country’s glory and enhancing the luster of our economy. But it’s also important to ensure that the benefits of this luster reach the common man in India, not just a select group of wealthy individuals.
