India hands over first batch of 10 electric buses to Mauritius

Port Louis: India has officially handed over the first batch of 10 electric buses (e-buses) to Mauritius, symbolizing a strengthening of bilateral ties between the two countries. The transfer took place during a ceremony held at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Public Service and Innovation in Reduit, in the presence of Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Indian High Commissioner Anurag Srivastava, and other senior officials and dignitaries.

This event marked a significant milestone in the ongoing partnership, enhancing green initiatives under their development cooperation, and reaffirming the Enhanced Strategic Partnership established during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mauritius in March 2025.

In his remarks, the Mauritian Prime Minister highlighted the importance of the e-bus project in promoting sustainability, reducing emissions, decreasing reliance on fuel imports, and generating employment in the e-mobility sector. He also expressed appreciation for India’s contributions across various sectors, including the Blue Economy, Artificial Intelligence, technology, food security, and maritime security.

High Commissioner Srivastava emphasized India’s dedication to a people-focused and sustainable development partnership, describing the electric buses as “moving symbols of friendship and a commitment to a cleaner and greener planet.” He also outlined India’s broader support for Mauritius’s green transition, including the development of an 8 MW solar farm at Henrietta, solar street lighting in Rodrigues, and other renewable energy projects.

During his visit in March, Prime Minister Modi held bilateral discussions with Mauritian Prime Minister Ramgoolam, during which they reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their strategic partnership and jointly inaugurated the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute, a symbol of capacity building.

India has been Mauritius’s leading development partner since independence, contributing significantly to its infrastructure with projects such as the India-Mauritius Metro Express, the new Supreme Court, ENT Hospital, social housing units, and educational initiatives—all of which have had a positive impact across the country.
