India to Host BRICS Anti-Drug Agencies Meeting in Guwahati from today to Boost Global Cooperation Against Narcotics

New Delhi: India will host the BRICS Heads of Anti-Drug Agencies Meeting in Guwahati, Assam, on July 7 and 8, bringing together senior officials from member nations to strengthen cooperation against transnational drug trafficking and emerging narcotics-related threats.

The two-day meeting, organised by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, aims to enhance intelligence sharing, operational coordination and institutional collaboration among BRICS countries.

Focus on Synthetic Drugs and Emerging Threats

The meeting will primarily focus on combating the growing menace of synthetic drugs, preventing the diversion of precursor chemicals, improving intelligence sharing and strengthening joint enforcement mechanisms.

Officials from BRICS member countries will review the drug situation in their respective nations and discuss strategies to tackle evolving global challenges posed by illicit narcotics networks.

    Six Thematic Sessions Planned

Delegates will participate in six thematic sessions covering key issues, including:

    • Leveraging digital technology for real-time drug interdiction
    • Countering drug trafficking through the darknet
    • Tackling emerging New Psychoactive Substances (NPS)
    • Preventing precursor chemical diversion
    • Drug demand reduction and rehabilitation measures
    • Strengthening institutional mechanisms for international cooperation

The meeting will conclude with the adoption of a joint declaration outlining areas of future cooperation.

    India to Highlight Anti-Narcotics Initiatives

The conference provides India with an opportunity to showcase its efforts to combat drug trafficking and dismantle organised criminal networks involved in the illegal narcotics trade.

Alongside enforcement measures, the government has also focused on awareness campaigns, community participation and treatment programmes for individuals affected by drug addiction.

India has recently released its Vision Document on Narcotics Control (2026–2029) to strengthen institutional capacity and improve coordination in addressing drug-related challenges.

    Strengthening BRICS Cooperation

As the current BRICS Chair, India will advocate greater cooperation through intelligence sharing on clandestine drug laboratories, monitoring of precursor chemicals and pharmaceuticals, exchange of best practices, joint training programmes and expert-level collaboration.

The initiative aligns with India’s BRICS Chairship theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” which emphasises collaborative and people-centric approaches to addressing global challenges.
