India leads global push as traditional medicine regains prominence

New Delhi: As traditional medicine re-emerges in global health discussions, India has positioned itself at the forefront by blending its vast traditional knowledge with modern regulation, digital systems and scientific validation, the government said on Tuesday. The country will host the second WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine from December 17 to 19, themed “Restoring Balance for People and Planet: The Science and Practice of Well-Being.”

WHO library launch, strong AYUSH network
The summit will also mark the launch of the WHO Traditional Medicine Global Library (TMGL), the world’s largest digital repository on traditional and integrative medicine, featuring over 1.5 million records. India’s strength in this field is reflected in its extensive AYUSH infrastructure, including 3,844 hospitals, over 36,800 dispensaries, more than 1,100 medical colleges, and over 7.5 lakh registered practitioners.

Traditional systems such as Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Yoga and Homoeopathy are deeply rooted in India’s culture and formally integrated into its public health framework. Recognised by the WHO for their accessibility and cultural relevance, these systems are increasingly seen as key contributors to health equity worldwide. India’s leadership aligns with its vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, reinforcing its role in shaping a holistic, evidence-based global health architecture.
