Government denies lockdown rumours, urges public not panic

The Central government has firmly clarified that there will be no lockdown in the country, urging citizens not to spread or believe rumours that create panic.

Amid rising speculation on social media linking the ongoing global crisis to possible restrictions, officials stated that such claims are completely baseless and misleading. The government emphasised that there is no proposal under consideration to impose a nationwide lockdown.

Union ministers also appealed to the public to avoid panic buying and misinformation, stressing that the situation is under control.

    PM Modi’s remarks misinterpreted

The confusion largely stemmed from recent statements made by Narendra Modi in Parliament, where he referred to the challenges posed by the ongoing global crisis, particularly in West Asia.

During his address, PM Modi compared the situation to the Covid-19 pandemic, saying that the country must remain prepared and united, just as it did during that time. However, he did not announce or indicate any lockdown.

Officials clarified that his remarks were meant to highlight preparedness and resilience not to signal restrictions.

Govt urges people not to create fear

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also addressed the issue, stating that unnecessary panic and rumours should be avoided.

He emphasised that spreading fear about lockdowns or shortages can disrupt normal life and create confusion among citizens. The government has urged people to rely only on official sources of information.

No shortage of fuel or essential supplies

Authorities have also reassured citizens that there is no shortage of essential commodities, including petrol, diesel, and LPG.

The Centre has taken multiple steps to ensure stable supply chains despite disruptions caused by the global situation. Reports of shortages and restrictions have been termed as part of a misinformation campaign aimed at triggering panic.

Officials highlighted that India currently has sufficient stock of key fuels and is actively managing imports and logistics.

    Focus on preparedness, not restrictions

The government’s focus remains on economic stability and preparedness, rather than imposing restrictions.

PM Modi has described the ongoing global conflict as a serious challenge that could impact supply chains, energy security, and the economy. He has called for a “Team India” approach, urging cooperation between the Centre and states to handle the situation effectively.

This includes measures to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential goods and support for vulnerable sections of society.

    Why lockdown rumours spread

The speculation around a possible lockdown gained momentum due to:

    • Memories of the Covid-19 lockdown
    • Concerns over global oil and supply disruptions
    • Social media misinformation
    • Government meetings on crisis preparedness

Experts say such factors often lead to panic, especially during uncertain global situations.

Clear message: Stay alert, not afraid

The government has made it clear that while the country must remain alert and prepared for global challenges, there is no need for fear or panic.

By drawing lessons from the Covid-19 period, authorities aim to strengthen preparedness without resorting to extreme measures like lockdowns.

The Centre has urged citizens to stay informed, act responsibly, and avoid spreading unverified information.
