India, Oman Seek Stronger Cooperation in Energy, SAF and Security: Omani Ambassador

New Delhi: India and Oman have significant scope to strengthen cooperation in energy, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and security, Oman’s Ambassador to India, Issa Saleh Abdullah Al Shibani, said on Monday.

Speaking to IANS on the sidelines of the Second India SAF Conclave and Awards 2026 in New Delhi, the Ambassador said the two countries are well positioned to expand collaboration across several strategic sectors.

Energy, SAF and Security Key Areas for Cooperation

Al Shibani said energy, sustainable aviation fuel and security offer considerable opportunities for deeper cooperation between India and Oman.

“Energy, sustainable aviation fuel and security are areas where there is ample scope for cooperation between our two countries,” he said, highlighting the geographical proximity and close links between the two nations.

He said India and Oman could achieve more through greater engagement and cooperation in these areas.

India and Oman Highlight Clean Energy Goals

The Ambassador also highlighted the climate commitments of both countries.

Oman has set a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, while India has set a target of reaching net-zero emissions by 2070.

Al Shibani expressed confidence that both countries are making progress towards their environmental targets and can support each other in developing clean-energy initiatives.

The discussions come amid growing international interest in Sustainable Aviation Fuel, which is increasingly being considered an important tool for reducing carbon emissions from the aviation sector.

India Urged to Develop Its Own SAF Model

Jimmy Olsson, President of the SAF Association and Chairman and Managing Director of ZR2 Group, said India should develop its own approach to sustainable aviation fuel rather than simply replicating models adopted by other countries.

He said India’s progress in solar energy, biomass utilisation and broader energy-sector reforms has created a strong foundation for developing a domestic SAF ecosystem.

Separately, when asked about sectors that could drive the goal of doubling bilateral economic exchange, Sweden’s Ambassador to India Petra Menander highlighted technology, innovation and the green transition, including AI, connectivity, telecommunications, mining and life sciences.

The discussions at the SAF conclave highlighted the potential for greater international cooperation in clean energy and sustainable aviation as countries work towards their long-term climate goals.
