New Delhi: India and Poland want to expand their partnership in defence, space and nuclear energy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk discussed these areas during their meeting at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Thursday.
Modi invited Polish companies to work with Indian firms on joint development and production in these strategic sectors. Speaking at a joint press conference after the talks, he said the relationship had gained momentum since his visit to Warsaw in 2024, when the two countries agreed to elevate their ties to a Strategic Partnership.
The discussions also covered trade, investment and technology. With businesses from both countries looking for new opportunities, Modi said India and Poland could work together to build reliable supply chains and move towards their target of doubling bilateral trade by 2030.
Trade and Investment in Focus
Tusk arrived in Delhi on Wednesday evening for a three-day visit. He is travelling with Poland’s Finance and Economy Minister Andrzej Domanski and a business delegation.
Modi pointed to the economic growth of both countries and said it offered scope for stronger commercial ties. He noted that India had recorded 7.8 per cent growth in the last quarter, while Poland’s GDP crossed the $1 trillion mark last year.
The India-European Union Free Trade Agreement could open further opportunities for businesses once it comes into effect, Modi said. Indian exporters could find greater opportunities in Poland for machinery, chemicals, plastics and engineering goods. He also highlighted potential Polish investment in railways, mobility, advanced manufacturing, food processing and biotechnology.
Business representatives will get another opportunity to explore these areas at the India-Poland Business Forum, scheduled to take place in New Delhi on October 22 and Bengaluru on October 23. Tusk is set to visit Bengaluru after his engagements in the national capital, where he will meet business stakeholders, including those from the IT and space sectors.
Modi Recalls Poland’s Historic Connection With India
The two leaders also have a shared history that goes back to the Second World War. Modi recalled how the royal families of Jamnagar and Kolhapur sheltered thousands of Polish children and families during the conflict.
The people of Poland still remember Jam Saheb as the “Good Maharaja”, known in Polish as Dobry Maharadza, Modi said. He described this historical connection as an important part of the friendship between the two countries.
Before meeting Modi, Tusk paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat in New Delhi. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also met the Polish Prime Minister and discussed ways to strengthen cooperation across different sectors.
