New York: India on Tuesday recalled its historic contribution to World War II and its long-standing role in UN peacekeeping missions, reaffirming its commitment to peace, multilateralism, and the United Nations.
Addressing the UN Security Council Open Debate on “Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-centered International System,” India’s Permanent Representative Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni highlighted India’s deep-rooted association with the UN and its role in shaping the global order.
He noted that over 2.5 million Indian soldiers fought in World War II alongside Allied forces, with more than 87,000 making the supreme sacrifice, stating that India’s founding membership of the UN reflected its “yearning for peace.”
India’s Role in Peacekeeping
The ambassador said India has remained committed to UN peacekeeping since the Cold War, contributing to missions in Korea, Indochina, Congo, and Gaza, playing a key role in maintaining international peace and security.
Call for UN Reform
He also stressed the need for reforms in the United Nations, particularly the Security Council, calling it outdated in its current form. He urged expansion, greater transparency, and stronger participation of the wider UN membership.
Parvathaneni added that the UN Security Council must evolve as a “living instrument, not a fossil,” emphasizing the need for timely reforms in line with present global realities.
