India Rejects China’s Mediation Claim on India‑Pak Ceasefire

India has strongly rejected claims by China that it played a mediating role in the ceasefire between India and Pakistan earlier this year following the May 2025 military confrontation. New Delhi reiterated that no third party was involved in the decision to halt hostilities and that the truce was reached through direct talks between the two countries’ military officials.

China’s Mediation Claim Draws Backlash

The development follows statements by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who claimed that Beijing had helped mediate several global conflicts including the India‑Pakistan standoff as part of its approach to “build peace that lasts”. Wang said China adopted an “objective and just stance” and assisted in resolving tensions in various hotspots around the world.

However, Indian officials dismissed these assertions as baseless, emphasizing that bilateral issues between India and Pakistan are resolved directly by the concerned parties and that third‑party intervention has never been part of such negotiations.

Direct DGMO Talks Led to Ceasefire

According to sources, the May 10 ceasefire following Operation Sindoor — India’s military response to a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir — was agreed upon after direct communication between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both nations. New Delhi has repeatedly made it clear that third‑party mediation is neither needed nor accepted in matters of bilateral security dialogue.

China’s Claims Follow Similar US Assertions

China’s attempt to claim credit for resolving the conflict comes after former US President Donald Trump had also asserted at global forums that his efforts contributed to the ceasefire. India has consistently dismissed such claims from both Beijing and Washington, maintaining that the peace was brokered solely through direct engagement between New Delhi and Islamabad.

India’s Longstanding Stance on Mediation

New Delhi’s response reinforces its long‑held position that external mediation has no place in India‑Pakistan relations, especially in sensitive matters of defence and security. The government continues to uphold that bilateral dialogue and military‑to‑military channels are the appropriate mechanisms to manage tensions and resolve hostilities.
