India Set to Boost Air Power With R-37M Missile Deal

New Delhi: Preparations to strengthen India’s air dominance have accelerated, with the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Russia in the final stages of a deal to procure the R-37M long-range air-to-air missiles. Reports indicate that India plans to buy around 300 missiles, with deliveries expected within 12–18 months. Once inducted, the R-37M will dramatically enhance the strike capabilities of India’s frontline fighter jets.

R-37M: One of the World’s Longest-Range Air-to-Air Missiles

The R-37M has a range of over 300 km and travels at Mach 6 (≈7,400 kmph), making it one of the fastest and longest-range air-to-air missiles globally. It is engineered to destroy high-value enemy assets such as AWACS, refuelling tankers, and electronic warfare aircraft.

Key features include:

• Active radar seeker for high-precision targeting
• Compatibility with large fighter jets like the Su-30MKI
• A powerful 60 kg warhead capable of taking down large airborne systems in a single strike

Seamless Integration With Su-30MKI

Since India’s Su-30MKI shares the same lineage as Russia’s Su-30SM, the R-37M will require only minor software upgrades for integration. Each Su-30MKI is expected to carry two R-37M missiles, while other IAF jets will continue to be armed with Astra and R-77 missiles.
This addition significantly boosts India’s ability to neutralize enemy AWACS from long distances, giving the Air Force a decisive battlefield edge.

BrahMos: India’s Existing Supersonic Strike Power

India already operates the powerful BrahMos missile, co-developed with Russia and named after the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers. Known for its speed, accuracy, and impact capability, BrahMos is among the world’s most formidable supersonic cruise missiles.

• Range: Currently 450 km, being upgraded to 800 km
• Speed: Around Mach 2.8 (≈3,700 kmph)
• Warhead: 200–300 kg high-explosive payload

It can destroy bunkers, command centers, ships, and missile launchers within seconds, reinforcing India’s position as a major missile power.
