India Holds 3.37 MMT Oil in Strategic Reserves: Govt

New Delhi, March 23, 2026: The Indian government has confirmed that the country currently holds over 3.37 million metric tonnes (MMT) of crude oil in its strategic petroleum reserves, strengthening its energy security amid global uncertainties.

Buffer Against Global Supply Disruptions

The information was shared by Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi in Parliament. The reserves are part of India’s preparedness to tackle short-term supply shocks, especially during geopolitical tensions or disruptions in global oil supply chains. India has developed strategic reserves with a total capacity of 5.33 MMT, designed to meet around 9.5 days of crude oil demand.

Total Oil Availability Extends to 74 Days

In addition to strategic reserves, oil marketing companies maintain significant storage of crude oil and petroleum products. Combined, India’s total oil reserves can meet demand for up to 74 days, offering a strong cushion against emergencies.

Expansion Plans to Boost Capacity

The government is also working to expand its storage capacity. New facilities planned in Odisha and Karnataka will add 6.5 MMT to existing reserves, enhancing India’s ability to manage future energy crises.

Strengthening Energy Security Strategy

India’s strategic petroleum reserves are managed by the Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited (ISPRL) and are located at key coastal sites such as Visakhapatnam, Mangaluru, and Padur. These reserves play a critical role in ensuring energy stability particularly as India remains one of the world’s largest importers of crude oil.
