Shreyas Iyer Eyes Winning Start as India Begin T20I Series Against Zimbabwe

New Delhi: India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer has said his team is determined to start the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe on a winning note, stressing the importance of staying focused on the present as the Men in Blue prepare for the challenge in Harare.

India will face Zimbabwe in the opening T20I at the Harare Sports Club on Thursday, with Iyer hoping to guide the visitors to their first series victory under his captaincy.

“We definitely want to be on the winning side. Let’s get used to the practice sessions, the weather and the conditions as quickly as possible and see to it that we get the best results,” Iyer said in a video shared by the BCCI.

Iyer focuses on present ahead of Zimbabwe challenge

The Indian skipper said the Zimbabwe tour presents an important opportunity for the team and insisted that the players are concentrating on making the most of every moment rather than looking too far ahead.

“I want to stay in the present and embrace each and every moment as much as possible,” Iyer said.

India enters the series after a disappointing run in the shortest format, having lost six consecutive T20Is, including defeats against Ireland and a 4-0 series loss to England.

Zimbabwe also heads into the contest after losing its recent T20I series 2-1 against Bangladesh.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi set to grab spotlight

Teenage opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is expected to be one of India’s biggest attractions during the series and could open the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma.

Both batters have enjoyed success at the Harare Sports Club. Abhishek scored his maiden T20I century at the venue, while Sooryavanshi struck a century during the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year.

The duo will be expected to provide India with an aggressive start at the top of the order.

Zimbabwe’s pace attack could test India’s batting

Despite India’s strong batting line-up, conditions in Harare are expected to favour fast bowlers.

The pitch generally offers good pace and bounce, giving Zimbabwe pacers Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava an opportunity to trouble the visitors.

India will need to handle the new ball carefully and avoid the batting collapses that affected the team in recent outings.

With home conditions in their favour, Zimbabwe will look to challenge India throughout the series, making a strong start crucial for the visitors.
