    PM Modi Hails Indian Women’s Asia Cup Triumph As Proud Moment For Indian Cricket

    New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team on winning the Women’s Asia Cup 2026, calling the triumph a “proud moment” for Indian cricket and praising the team’s confidence, consistency and remarkable spirit throughout the tournament.

    India clinched the Women’s Asia Cup for a record-extending eighth time, defeating Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the 2026 Asia Cup final on Sunday.

    Taking to X, PM Modi said, “A proud moment for Indian cricket! Congratulations to the Women’s team on winning the Asia Cup. Their confidence, consistency and remarkable spirit were on full display throughout the tournament. May this triumph inspire millions of youngsters across the country to play more and shine.”

    India Beat Sri Lanka By 72 Runs In Asia Cup Final

    The Women in Blue delivered an all-round performance to avenge their 2024 final loss to Sri Lanka and continued their dominance over the Lankan side in Asia Cup finals.

    It was India’s sixth victory over Sri Lanka in Asia Cup finals, including the ODI format and the 2004 tournament, when India defeated Sri Lanka 5-0 in the two-team competition.

    India posted a formidable 183/5, with Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana laying the foundation with a record 129-run opening partnership and scoring impressive half-centuries.

    The Indian bowlers then backed up the batters effectively, with Shree Charani claiming four wickets and Deepti Sharma taking three wickets as India bowled Sri Lanka out for 111.

    Shafali, Mandhana Star In India’s Batting Performance

    Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana provided India with a flying start through their record partnership.

    Shafali smashed 68 off 39 balls and also registered the fastest half-century in the history of the tournament, reaching the milestone in just 24 deliveries.

    Mandhana contributed a composed 59 off 39 balls before Sri Lanka fought back during the latter part of India’s innings.

    Captain Harmanpreet Kaur struggled at No. 3 and was dismissed for 14, while Richa Ghosh was removed for 17.

    G Kamalini, playing her first match of the tournament, provided a late boost with a five-ball 15 to help India finish strongly.

    Shree Charani Leads India’s Bowling Attack

    Sri Lanka’s chase never gathered enough momentum as India’s bowlers kept the pressure on throughout the innings.

    Shree Charani was the pick of the bowlers with 4/20, while Deepti Sharma claimed 3/19.

    Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 111, with Chamari Athapaththu top-scoring with 36 and Nilakshika Silva contributing 22.
