India’s Wholesale Inflation Rises to 9.87% in June; Fuel and Mineral Oil Prices Drive Surge

New Delhi: India’s wholesale price inflation (WPI) increased to 9.87 per cent in June on a year-on-year basis, according to data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Tuesday.

The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for all commodities rose to 110.2 in June, reflecting a rise in overall wholesale prices compared to the previous year.

Fuel and Power Inflation Remains Elevated

Among major commodity groups, inflation in primary articles increased to 7 per cent, while fuel and power inflation moderated but remained high at 27.41 per cent.

The biggest pressure within the fuel category came from mineral oils, which recorded inflation of 46.48 per cent, while crude petroleum and natural gas saw a year-on-year inflation rate of 34.75 per cent in June.

    Manufacturing Inflation Stays Unchanged

Inflation in manufactured products remained unchanged at 7.48 per cent during June.

The WPI Food Index, which includes food articles and manufactured food products, recorded an annual inflation rate of 6.14 per cent.

    Within primary articles:

    • Food articles inflation: 5.49 per cent
    • Non-food articles inflation: 11.07 per cent

    April WPI Data Revised Upward

The government also revised the final WPI inflation figure for April 2026 to 8.36 per cent from the earlier provisional estimate of 8.26 per cent.

The revised WPI index for April stood at 108.9, compared with the provisional estimate of 108.8.

The provisional WPI data for June was compiled with an 82.6 per cent weighted response rate, while the final April estimate was based on a 97.5 per cent weighted response rate.

    New WPI Base Year Introduced

Earlier in June, the government introduced a revised WPI series with 2022-23 as the new base year, replacing the previous 2011-12 base year series.

The revised series is part of a broader effort to update producer price measurement in India. The government also introduced new series for the Producer Price Index (PPI), Input Producer Price Index (IPPI) and Services Producer Price Index (SPPI).

The next provisional WPI data for July will be released on August 14, the ministry said.

In May 2026, India’s WPI inflation stood at 9.68 per cent.
