Indian Embassy issues advisory amid protests in Italy, advising citizens to remain vigilant

Rome: Amid ongoing protests and violence in Italy, the Indian Embassy on Monday issued an advisory for Indian citizens living there. The Embassy advised Indians to remain vigilant, avoid crowded areas and protest sites, and monitor local news.

In a post on the social media platform X, the Indian Embassy stated that protests had erupted in some Italian cities last week. Therefore, Indian citizens should exercise caution and avoid visiting areas where protests are taking place.

Italian Prime Minister Condemns Violence Against Police

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Sunday that security personnel maintaining law and order were facing violence. She alleged that some individuals, through organized groups, were trying to exploit the protests to incite conflict and chaos.

In a post on X, Meloni expressed solidarity with security personnel and thanked them for their work. He said security personnel were deployed to protect citizens, workers, businesses, and all those who want to live in their cities without fear.

Violence in Milan and Turin, Police Injured

Meloni expressed respect for the peaceful protesters on Saturday and urged opposition parties to unequivocally condemn incidents of violence.

He said that during the demonstration in Milan, stones were thrown at security personnel, injuring some officers. In Turin, some people were stopped with stones and hammers used to break windows.

According to the Prime Minister, the railway station in Bologna had to be closed as a precautionary measure due to the unrest.

Meloni said – Protesting is a right, violence is not

Meloni said that peaceful protests are an important part of democracy, but violence, damage to public property, and attacks on security personnel are unacceptable.

He appealed to the opposition to condemn the violence without any ambiguity and to send a clear message that all protests should remain peaceful.

Meloni stressed that such acts of violence should be met with united protest. He said that silence or hesitation on this issue is unacceptable.
