Two Indian LPG ships sail safely out of Gulf

In a significant development amid ongoing tensions in the Gulf region, two Indian ships carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) have safely sailed out and are now heading towards Indian ports.

The vessels, identified as BW TYR and BW ELM, successfully navigated through the sensitive Gulf waters and are currently en route to India, carrying crucial fuel supplies.

Around 94,000 tonnes of LPG on board

According to official sources, the two ships together are transporting approximately 94,000 metric tonnes of LPG.

This shipment is particularly important as LPG is a key household fuel in India, widely used for cooking. The arrival of these vessels is expected to help stabilise supply amid concerns triggered by global geopolitical tensions.

Expected arrival at Indian ports

The ships are scheduled to arrive at different Indian ports in the coming days. BW TYR is expected to dock in Mumbai by March 31, while BW ELM is likely to reach New Mangalore on April 1.

Officials said that preparations are already in place to ensure smooth unloading and distribution of the fuel once the vessels arrive.

Safe passage amid Gulf tensions

The safe exit of these ships comes at a time when maritime movement in the Gulf region has been under strain due to escalating tensions in West Asia. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route, has witnessed disruptions affecting oil and gas transportation.

Despite the volatile situation, Indian authorities have been coordinating closely to ensure the safety of vessels and crew members.

Government ensures safety of ships and crew

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways confirmed that all necessary measures have been taken to safeguard Indian ships operating in the Gulf region. Officials also stated that all Indian seafarers remain safe and no untoward incidents have been reported in recent hours.

Continuous monitoring and coordination with international agencies have played a key role in ensuring secure passage.

Boost to India’s energy supply chain

The successful transit of these LPG carriers is expected to provide relief to India’s energy supply chain, which has been under pressure due to global disruptions.

India relies heavily on LPG imports, with a significant portion sourced from the Gulf region. Ensuring uninterrupted supply is crucial to meet domestic demand, especially for household consumption.

Part of larger effort to move stranded vessels

The movement of BW TYR and BW ELM is part of a broader effort by India to bring back fuel-laden ships stranded in the Gulf due to geopolitical tensions.

In recent days, several Indian vessels have either crossed or are attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz, reflecting a gradual normalisation of shipping activity in the region.
