Indian-Origin Democrat Suhas Subramanyam Secures Second Term in US House

Washington: Indian-American Congressman Suhas Subramanian has won his second consecutive term in the US midterm elections. The son of a Tamil doctor couple, Suhas has been re-elected to the US House of Representatives from Virginia’s 10th Congressional District. His mother hails from Bengaluru, while his father grew up in Chennai and Secunderabad.

Following his victory, Suhas wrote on the social media platform X, “The election campaign is over, but the work has just begun. I am excited to work with my community to bring about change in Washington.”

In an interview last year, he mentioned his Indian family ties, saying that his mother is from Bengaluru and his father is from Chennai and Secunderabad. He still has family members living in India.

His mother arrived in the United States in 1979

Suhas Subramanian was born in Houston, Texas, in 1986. His mother arrived in the United States via Dulles Airport in 1979. Suhas connects this incident to the history of his constituency and the immigrant community.

In an interview with CNBC-TV18, he stated that Dulles Airport and his constituency have been an important gateway to the United States for his family.

Suhas studied philosophy at Tulane University and earned a law degree from Northwestern University. He worked as an aide to U.S. Representative Susan Kosmas. He then served as a clerk on Senator Dick Durbin’s Senate Judiciary Committee, where he worked on the DREAM Act.

In 2015, during former President Barack Obama’s tenure, he also served as a technology policy advisor in the White House. He has also worked as a lawyer, run a small technology company, and volunteered as an emergency medical technician and firefighter.

    Many Historic Achievements in Virginia

In 2019, Suhas became the first Indian-American, the first South Asian, and the first Hindu to be elected to the Virginia General Assembly. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2020 to 2024, and also briefly served in the Virginia Senate.

In 2024, he won the US House of Representatives seat vacated by Jennifer Weston. Now, with his second consecutive victory, he has retained his term in Congress.

In the US Congress, Suhas is a member of the Oversight Committee. He is also the ranking member of its Military and Foreign Affairs Subcommittee. He also serves on the Cybersecurity and Information Technology Panel, the Science, Space and Technology Committee, and the Ethics Committee.

Raised voice on H-1B visas and India-US relations

Suhas has been active on several issues related to the Indian-American community. He supports the Domestic Visa Renewal Modernization Act, which is part of a three-billion-dollar package that proposes to allow H-1B, L, O, and other visa holders to renew their visas within the United States.

Criticizing the Trump administration’s decision to impose a $100,000 fee on new H-1B visa applications, he said, “This is not an immigration policy, but an economic harm.”

He also signed a letter sent to President Donald Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in October 2025, expressing concern about the decision regarding H-1B visas.

Suhas has also criticized the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on India. In an interview with the Hindustan Times, he stated that the burden of tariffs falls on American citizens. Describing India as a natural ally of the United States, he said that Trump has mismanaged relations with India.

Also worked on data center legislation

Suhas has also introduced the Responsible Data Center Siting Act to establish and regulate data centers. He stated on social media that Congress should set appropriate rules and limits for data centers.

During the final phase of his election campaign, he also held a rally with Virginia Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner.

Suhas Subramaniam lives in Loudoun County, Virginia, with his wife, Miranda Pena Subramaniam, and two daughters.
