Indian Railways trains will pass under the bullet train station, 3 new rail lines completed in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: Indian Railways has taken a significant step towards operating regular trains under the bullet train station being constructed in Ahmedabad. The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) inspected three newly constructed broad gauge rail lines and their associated platforms at Ahmedabad Railway Station. However, passenger train operations from these platforms will commence only after obtaining the necessary safety clearances and completing other technical and operational procedures.

The new rail lines are 16, 17, and 18, which connect platforms 10, 11, and 12 at Ahmedabad Railway Station. E. Srinivas, Commissioner of Railway Safety, Western Circle, Mumbai, inspected them.

Regular trains will run under the bullet train station

This construction work is being carried out as part of the comprehensive redevelopment of Ahmedabad Railway Station and restructuring of the railway yard, in conjunction with the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Project. This arrangement will allow Indian Railways’ regular trains to pass beneath the bullet train station. This is considered a significant achievement towards better coordination between the two rail systems.

Ved Prakash, Divisional Railway Manager of Ahmedabad Division, stated that the construction of new platforms and broad-gauge lines for Indian Railways’ trains to operate beneath the bullet train station is a historic milestone in the modernization of railways.

He stated that platforms 10, 11, and 12, along with related railway infrastructure, have been developed beneath the Ahmedabad bullet train station as part of the high-speed rail project. According to him, this is a unique example of modern railway engineering and technical coordination between different rail systems.

Express and Vande Bharat trains will also find a place

Once these platforms are operational, express trains, Vande Bharat Express, and local passenger trains will be able to operate here. This is expected to increase the station’s capacity and facilitate more streamlined train operations.

Platform 10 was closed from July 2022 due to construction work related to the high-speed rail project. With the completion of construction of three new broad gauge lines and platforms, progress has been made towards resuming operations on platforms 10, 11, and 12.

Inspection of the bypass line between Asarwa-Sabarmati

The Commissioner of Railway Safety also inspected the new broad gauge bypass line constructed between Asarwa Railway Station and Sabarmati ‘A’ Cabin. This line features Wi-Fi connectivity. This is expected to improve connectivity between different rail routes and facilitate train movement planning in the Ahmedabad region.

In addition, a fifth rail line is being developed between Ahmedabad Railway Station and Kankaria Depot. This aims to increase the capacity of the regional rail network, reduce operational bottlenecks, and optimize the use of existing infrastructure.

Ved Prakash, Chief Administrative Officer (Construction), Pradeep Gupta, and senior officials from the Railway’s construction and operations departments were present during the inspection.

Continuous Changes in Ahmedabad Station’s Infrastructure

Ahmedabad Railway Station has undergone periodic developments with the expansion of the rail network and the conversion from meter gauge to broad gauge. Prior to 2017, meter gauge trains operated from platforms 11 and 12.

At that time, eight pairs of passenger services operated on the Ahmedabad-Himmatnagar meter gauge section. These included the Ahmedabad-Udaipur Fast Passenger, Ahmedabad-Khedbrahma Passenger, Ahmedabad-Himmatnagar Passenger, Ahmedabad-Nandol-Dahegam Passenger, and Ahmedabad-Udaipur Express.

In addition, services such as the Ahmedabad-Mahesana Passenger, Ahmedabad-Botad Passenger, Ahmedabad-Ranuj Passenger, and Ahmedabad-Mahesana Express also operated. These trains connected Ahmedabad to surrounding towns and rural areas.

Passenger operations to commence after security clearance

According to railway officials, necessary security clearances and prescribed technical and operational procedures will be completed before passenger services can commence on the new platform. Western Railway is conducting the necessary inspections in this regard.

New broad gauge lines, the Asarwa-Sabarmati bypass, and an additional rail line being developed towards the Kankaria depot are expected to strengthen the connectivity and capacity of Ahmedabad’s railway network. This could help handle increasing rail traffic and make more effective use of existing infrastructure.
