Mumbai: Indian equity markets opened on a positive note on Monday, supported by the revival of the monsoon, renewed foreign institutional investor (FII) buying and softer crude oil prices.
The BSE Sensex opened at 77,940.90, up 176.99 points (0.23%), while the NSE Nifty50 started the session at 24,306.85, gaining 36 points (0.15%).
Realty, Metal Stocks Lead Early Gains
Among sectoral indices, Nifty Realty emerged as the top performer, rising 0.86%, followed by Nifty Metal, which advanced 0.39%.
Healthcare-related indices also traded in positive territory, with Nifty MidSmall Healthcare gaining 0.32% and Nifty Pharma rising 0.24%. Most other sectoral indices, however, traded under pressure during early deals.
From the Nifty50 pack, Kotak Mahindra Bank, TCS, Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Infosys, Eicher Motors, IndiGo, Tata Consumer Products, ONGC and ITC were among the early losers.
Monsoon Revival, FII Buying Boost Sentiment
Market experts said the revival of the southwest monsoon and foreign institutional investors turning net buyers on Friday have improved near-term market sentiment.
Investors are now shifting their focus to the June quarter earnings season, with financial and automobile companies expected to post stronger results, while the IT sector is likely to report subdued earnings and cautious guidance.
Technically, analysts said the Nifty remains in a constructive trend after extending gains for a third consecutive session last week.
They see immediate resistance near the 24,400 level, while support is placed between 24,200 and 24,100.
Meanwhile, Brent crude declined 0.76% to $71.55 per barrel, while WTI crude fell nearly 1% to trade below $69 per barrel, providing additional support to domestic markets.
Across Asia, markets traded mixed, with Japan’s Nikkei falling nearly 1%, South Korea’s KOSPI declining almost 2%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng edged higher.
