Travel havoc continued at Chennai International Airport as IndiGo Airlines’ prolonged operational crisis disrupted flight schedules for the ninth consecutive day, leaving passengers stranded, frustrated and scrambling for alternatives. IndiGo’s cancellations and delays have affected major domestic and some international routes, contributing to persistent chaos at the airport and beyond.
According to reports, the carrier’s ongoing issues have stemmed from a severe operational breakdown, causing nearly 220 flights to be cancelled on December 10 alone, with additional disruptions expected to continue. Major hubs such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai have been among the worst affected, forcing passengers to check flight statuses repeatedly and reconsider travel plans at short notice.
At Chennai airport, chaos was visible as IndiGo cancelled dozens of flights, forcing hundreds of travelers to queue at airline counters amid confusion over refunds, rescheduling and alternate plans. Officials noted that arrival and departure cancellations were particularly high in recent days, frustrating both local and connecting passengers attempting to fly during the peak holiday season.

Airport authorities and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) deployed additional staff to manage crowds, while railways arranged special trains to accommodate some of the displaced flyers. Despite some passengers being allowed into the terminal for operating flights, many continued to crowd airline service desks to verify the status of their journeys.
Industry analysts and aviation reports indicate the disruptions are linked to crew shortages and scheduling challenges, particularly after new Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) norms came into effect without sufficient planning by IndiGo. The airline’s inability to roster enough pilots and cabin crew around the new regulations has been widely cited as a core factor behind the mass cancellations and stiff travel disruption.
In response, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has set up an oversight team to monitor operations closely and ensure compliance with safety and operational standards. Meanwhile, IndiGo’s management has apologized to passengers and announced compensation packages, including travel vouchers for severely impacted flyers — a move aimed at mitigating passenger inconvenience as the airline works to return services to normal.
The widespread cancellations have triggered broader effects across the travel and hospitality sectors, with airfares on alternate airlines surging sharply due to seat shortages and many travelers forced to seek last-minute alternatives. Industry bodies and government officials are now examining long-term solutions to prevent such crises from overwhelming India’s aviation infrastructure in future peak seasons.
Passengers continue to be urged to check flight status directly with IndiGo and airport authorities before travel, and to prepare for possible further changes as the situation unfolds.
