Indore Water Tragedy: Sewage Found in Municipal Water, Investigation Confirms 24 Deaths

Indore: An investigation into the Bhagirathpura water pollution case has revealed that 24 people died after drinking water contaminated by sewage supplied through the municipal pipeline. These deaths occurred between December 2025 and February 2026.

Sewage Found in Drinking Water

The investigation found that sewage had mixed with drinking water pipelines in the affected area, exposing a large number of people to contaminated water. Dangerous pathogens such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Vibrio cholerae were found in water samples.

Pipeline Delays Caused

The investigation, headed by retired Madhya Pradesh High Court Judge Justice Sushil Kumar Gupta, cited delays in laying the new Narmada Water Pipeline as a major cause of the contaminated water problem.

The investigation report also pointed to administrative negligence by municipal officials regarding the water supply system.

24 deaths confirmed

Locals claimed a higher death toll, but the investigation confirmed 24 deaths were linked to contaminated water.

The investigation report has been submitted to the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The commission has also recommended increased compensation for the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
