Karachi, June 3: 216 prisoners escaped from Malir Jail in Karachi, Pakistan on Monday night. According to the jail administration, the prisoners were taken out of the barracks as a precautionary measure after the earthquake tremors in Karachi.
According to Geo News, during this time, the prisoners took advantage of the situation and escaped from the main gate. About 80 of these prisoners have been recaptured, while 135 prisoners are still absconding. Jail Superintendent Arshad Shah confirmed this on Tuesday morning.
Earlier, many media reports were saying that the prisoners had escaped by breaking the wall. The administration has clarified that no wall was broken, all the prisoners escaped from the main gate during the stampede.
Prisoners jostled after the earthquake
Home Minister Lanjar said that after the earthquake, 700 to 1000 prisoners were brought out of the barracks. In this chaos, more than 100 prisoners started pushing towards the main gate and escaped.
According to the jail administration, the search operation is still going on. Teams of Special Security Unit (SSU), Rapid Response Force (RRF), Rangers and Frontier Corps (FC) are working together in this operation.
Immediately after the incident, the Rangers and FC took control of the jail. IG Jail, DIG Jail and Jail Minister reached the spot and took stock of the situation.
One prisoner died in the accident, and 4 security personnel were injured
There is news of the death of one prisoner in the incident. At the same time, 4 security personnel have been injured. The Home Minister admitted that administrative negligence could also be the reason for this incident.
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has been given full information. He instructed the Home Minister to go to the jail and monitor the situation.
Sindh Governor Kamran Tesori also took cognizance of the incident and asked the Home Minister and IG Sindh Police to arrest all the prisoners soon.
Home Minister Lanjar said that the identity and records of every escaped prisoner are available. Raids are going on in their homes and surrounding areas.
The Jail Minister said that disciplinary action will be taken against negligent officers. For security reasons, check posts and surveillance are being strictly maintained.
