United Nations: The United Nations reports that approximately 280,000 residents of Gaza have been newly displaced since the escalation of hostilities over the past two weeks. Many are being forced into overcrowded shelters infested with fleas and mites, according to humanitarian officials.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated that new Israeli displacement orders have been issued, compelling more people to flee in search of safety.
“OCHA noted that more individuals are moving into already overcrowded shelters,” emphasizing that reports of flea and mite infestations are leading to skin rashes and other health concerns.
The blockade on aid has severely hindered efforts to address hygiene issues due to a lack of materials in Gaza.
Despite these challenges, OCHA indicated that the United Nations and its humanitarian partners are doing their best to respond to the urgent needs of the population as conditions permit. The ongoing month-long blockade, preventing the entry of humanitarian aid and essential goods, is depriving residents of basic necessities, and food resources are rapidly depleting.
Nonetheless, food security partners have managed to provide over 900,000 hot meals daily up to this point.
OCHA has called for the immediate reopening of crossings to allow cargo and humanitarian aid into Gaza.
Earlier, the Israeli military ordered civilians in several areas of northern Gaza to evacuate immediately, citing intercepted rocket fire from Palestinian territories.
Military spokesman Avichay Adraee urged residents to “move immediately west to the shelters in Gaza City,” accusing “terrorist organizations” of launching attacks “from among civilians.”
