Maldives’ State Minister for Environment Fatimath Shamnaz has been arrested on charges of doing black magic on President Mohammed Muizzu. According to Spanish news agency EFE, apart from Fatimath, 2 more people have been arrested. The court has sent everyone on 7-day police remand.
However, no statement has been given by the Maldives government in this matter so far. Earlier, the police had searched Fatimath’s house. During this, a lot of items related to black magic were recovered from there. Fatimath is the wife of Adam Ramiz, a minister working in the President’s office.
Fatimath was a state minister in the President’s official house
Fatimath has previously been a member of Male’s City Council along with President Muizzu. Then Muizzu was the mayor of the capital Male. After he became President last year, Fatimath also resigned from the council. After this, she became the Minister of State of Muliaj, the official residence of the President. Later she was transferred to the Ministry of Environment.
Black magic in Maldives is known as Fundita or Sihuru. It has been called a serious crime in Islamic law. However, despite this, a large number of people in Maldives practice black magic. Last month, the police arrested a 60-year-old man for doing black magic on a leader of Muizzu’s party.
Black magic was also used to change the results in the last 2 presidential elections.
In August 2018, 4 people were arrested on the Kulhudhuffushi island of Maldives. They were accused of doing black magic for the victory of the opposition in the presidential election to be held in September 2018.
In December 2015, the Islamic Ministry of Maldives issued a public statement warning that black magic is spreading on a large scale in the society and the public needs to stay away from such practices.
Earlier, black magic was also used to overturn the results of the 2013 presidential election. For this, a cursed coconut and a black magic doll were placed at the polling station.
