Los Angeles: Approximately 700 US Marines have been deployed to Los Angeles in response to ongoing protests, marking a significant escalation in the federal response. The Marines, from the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines based at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California, will join thousands of National Guard personnel activated over the weekend by President Donald Trump. Notably, this deployment was carried out without the direct approval of California’s governor or Los Angeles mayor.

This move signals a substantial display of military force against the protests, which have involved clashes centered around immigration enforcement. The Marines are primarily tasked with protecting federal property and personnel. They are not authorized to carry out law enforcement actions such as making arrests unless Trump invokes the Insurrection Act, which allows the president to deploy the military to suppress insurrections.

Located about 220 kilometers east of Los Angeles, Twentynine Palms is where the Marines are stationed before being sent to the city. The deployment follows the President’s decision to activate 2,000 National Guard troops to control immigration protests, bypassing the usual authority of California’s governor. Early Sunday saw around 300 National Guard members arrive in downtown Los Angeles, with more expected within the next 24 hours. Over the weekend, protests against immigration raids led to clashes between protesters and security forces, with over 1,000 demonstrators participating in the confrontations.
