Kabul [Afghanistan]: Afghanistan experienced two earthquakes early Saturday morning, measuring magnitudes of 4.2 and 4.5. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the first quake struck at 4:20 AM Indian Standard Time (IST), located at latitude 36.21 N and longitude 71.22 E, and occurred at a depth of 100 kilometers.

The NCS shared this information on X, noting, “EQ of M: 4.5, On: 22/02/2025 04:20:01 IST, Lat: 36.21 N, Long: 71.22 E, Depth: 100 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”

The second earthquake hit shortly after, at 4:33 AM IST, registering a magnitude of 4.2. This quake was recorded at latitude 36.44 N and longitude 70.90 E, at a depth of 150 kilometers. The NCS also posted details about this event on X: “EQ of M: 4.2, On: 22/02/2025 04:33:34 IST, Lat: 36.44 N, Long: 70.90 E, Depth: 150 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, a magnitude 4.3 earthquake also shook Afghanistan. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) highlighted that the country is particularly susceptible to natural disasters such as seasonal flooding, landslides, and earthquakes. These recurrent seismic events pose significant risks to vulnerable communities, which are already struggling due to years of conflict and underdevelopment, leaving them ill-equipped to handle multiple crises.

The Red Cross noted that Afghanistan has a history of significant earthquakes, especially in the geologically active Hindu Kush Mountain range, which is situated along fault lines between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, with one such fault line passing through Herat.
