Dhaka: In a significant outbreak of violence in Bangladesh under the interim government of Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus, several assailants ambushed an Air Force Base in Cox’s Bazar, located on the southeastern coast.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, the attack was carried out by individuals from Samity Para, near the Air Force base. The Bangladesh Air Force is reportedly taking necessary measures in response to the incident.
Local news sources indicate that multiple injuries occurred during the clashes, which escalated after air force personnel fired several rounds at the protesters around 11:30 AM local time.
A local journalist noted that the confrontation began when the Deputy Commissioner instructed residents to vacate the Air Force area and relocate to the Khurushkul Housing Project.
This incident underscores the escalating unrest in Bangladesh, which has experienced unprecedented violence since the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.
Last week, a leader from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Mohammad Babul Mia, was brutally murdered. Another senior BNP figure, Shamsuzzaman Dudu, condemned the interim government, stating, “Under this interim government, workers and political leaders have been killed. The perpetrators must be held accountable swiftly; otherwise, public and political dissatisfaction will intensify.”
Earlier this month, violent clashes at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) resulted in over 100 students being injured.
The ongoing violence has sparked widespread outrage across the country, with many citizens demanding Yunus’s resignation as incidents of violence, including against minority groups, continue to rise.
