New Delhi: Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams, who recently returned to Earth after an extended mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), reflected on her awe-inspiring views of India from space during a press conference.
After spending 286 days in space, Williams was simply amazed by the sight of India from above, stating, “Amazing, just amazing.”
Williams, who often embraces her Indian heritage, was particularly enchanted by the stunning views of the Himalayas. She recalled how her fellow astronaut, Butch Wilmore, would take remarkable photographs every time the ISS passed over the majestic mountain range. “Every time we went over the Himalayas, Butch got incredible pictures; it is just amazing,” she reminisced, clearly nostalgic about the breathtaking scenery.
Describing her connection to India from space, Williams likened the landscape to “a ripple that happened when the plates collided,” leading to a vibrant mix of colors as it flowed into India.
When viewing Gujarat and Mumbai, the fishing fleets visible off the coast became familiar markers for her, providing a sense of homecoming. “It gives you a little bit of a beacon, here we come,” she added.
Williams noted the extraordinary view of India at night, characterized by a “network of lights” that extends from larger cities to smaller ones, all set against the grandeur of the Himalayas. This unique perspective was something she found truly “incredible.”
The 59-year-old astronaut also expressed enthusiasm about NASA’s upcoming Axiom mission, which will transport four astronauts into space, including Subhanshu Shukla, an Indian Air Force test pilot and ISRO astronaut. “It’s pretty awesome,” she said, recognizing Shukla as a “hometown hero” for India.
In addition, Williams expressed her desire to contribute to India’s space program, stating that she would love to share her experiences and support the country’s expanding space ambitions: “I would love to be a part of that and help them along.”
Having parents born in India, she also hopes to visit her “father’s country” soon. During her chat with Wilmore, they joked about bringing their crew members along on a trip to India, with Williams humorously adding, “You might stick out a little bit. That is okay. We will get you all primed with some spicy food.”
