Denmark’s Prime Minister Mate Frederiksen was suddenly attacked by a man in Copenhagen. According to the report of news agency Ritzau, the accused came from behind and pushed Frederiksen hard. Due to this she stumbled. However, Copenhagen Police has arrested the attacker and he is being questioned.

This attack has happened just before the European Union (EU) elections.

EU elections are to be held on 9 June. Danish PM Frederiksen is campaigning with Social Democrats EU’s lead candidate Christel Schaldemoes. She was returning from campaigning at the time of the incident.

Denmark’s state broadcaster DR quoted the Prime Minister’s Office as saying that Frederiksen is shocked by this attack. Eyewitnesses of the incident said that a man came from the other side and pushed PM Mate’s shoulder hard. The push was very strong, but she avoided falling.

There was a tussle with Trump over Greenland

46-year-old Frederiksen became the Prime Minister of Denmark in 2019. She took charge of her party Social Democrats in 2015. With this, she became the youngest PM of Denmark ever. In 2019, the then US President Donald Trump said in a statement before the state visit to Denmark that he would like to buy Greenland, Denmark’s part in North America.

Frederiksen described this statement of Trump as absurd. Trump was angry with this. Cancelling his Denmark visit, he said that his statement is not for me but for America. No one can talk to America like this.

Violent attacks on European politicians increased

Violent attacks on European politicians have increased in recent times. On June 4, a suspect in Mannheim stabbed a politician of the Far Right Alternative for Germany party with a box cutter. Matthias Ecke, a European Parliament candidate for Germany’s centre-left Social Democrats, was also attacked, suffering a broken cheekbone and eyeball in the assault in Dresden.
