Vienna: A 23-year-old man allegedly stabbed five passersby, resulting in the death of a 14-year-old and injuring four others, according to police reports cited by CNN. The suspect, a Syrian national legally residing in Austria, was apprehended following the incident. Police spokesperson Rainer Dionisio mentioned that the motive remains unclear, and investigations into the suspect’s background are ongoing.
A 42-year-old witness, who works for a food delivery service, observed the attack from his vehicle. The victims, all male, included two with serious injuries and two with minor injuries. Peter Kaiser, the governor of Carinthia, expressed condolences to the victim’s family, condemning the act as an “outrageous atrocity” that demands severe repercussions.
Authorities planned to create a designated area in the city center for those wishing to mourn. The police are also investigating whether the suspect acted alone and are searching for any potential accomplices, with no known connection between the attacker and the victims at this time.
In 2024, Austria received 24,941 asylum applications, with Syrians comprising the largest group. Migration has been a significant issue in recent elections, contributing to the far-right Freedom Party’s success. The number of asylum seekers has notably decreased from over 100,000 in 2022 to around 59,000 in 2023.
In response to the stabbing, far-right leader Herbert Kickl expressed his shock on social media, criticizing politicians for allowing violent crimes to escalate in Austria. He described the situation as a systemic failure, emphasizing the need for changes to immigration laws as outlined by his party in their election platform.
