Villach: In Villach, Austria, on Saturday, a stabbing incident left one person dead and five others injured, leading to the arrest of a Syrian man at the scene. According to the New York Times, officials stated that the suspect, a 23-year-old asylum seeker who arrived in Austria from Syria in 2020, was inspired by the Islamic State militant group and had radicalized online. The police indicated that the victims were selected at random.
The attack occurred around 4 PM when the suspect began stabbing individuals with a folding knife. Police responded within seven minutes, but by that time, a 14-year-old had been killed and five others were hurt. A 42-year-old Syrian man intervened by ramming his car into the attacker, which likely prevented further casualties. Two police officers then quickly restrained and arrested the suspect.
Authorities reported that the suspect had no previous criminal record and was not under surveillance by domestic intelligence. However, during a search of his apartment, police discovered evidence of “Islamist thought,” including Islamic State flags, though no weapons or explosives were found. Investigations into the suspect’s background and motives are ongoing, with indications that his radicalization occurred rapidly online.
