Dhaka: Bangladesh has reached out to India to arrange a meeting between its Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bangkok during the first week of April. Both leaders are expected to be in Thailand from April 2-4 for the sixth BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok.

Md Touhid Hossain, Foreign Affairs Adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government, confirmed to ANI, “We have diplomatically approached India for a bilateral meeting between our two leaders on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit.”

Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, is also scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on March 28.

Earlier in February, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Hossain during the Indian Ocean Conference in Oman. Jaishankar later shared on social media that their discussions focused on strengthening bilateral ties and the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry also issued a statement highlighting discussions on various bilateral matters of mutual concern and interest. The statement noted that since their previous meeting at the UNGA in September 2024, both countries have engaged in various bilateral initiatives, including the Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) between Bangladesh and India in Dhaka on December 9, 2024, and Bangladesh’s Energy Adviser’s participation in the India Energy Week in New Delhi on February 10-11, 2025.

Both countries also acknowledged the scheduled meeting of the Directors General of Border Guarding Forces in New Delhi from February 18-20, which aims to address and resolve border-related issues. Furthermore, Bangladesh emphasized the need to begin discussions on renewing the Ganges Water Treaty and requested India to consider holding a meeting of the SAARC Standing Committee.
