Canada: House of Commons observe ‘moment of silence’ for Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar

He was shot dead outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia on June 18 last year.

Canada: In order to Honour, Khalistani Separatist Harddep Singh Nijjar, a minute’s silence was observed in the Canadian Parliament. The same was done to commemorate him on his first death anniversary. Nijjar, a Khalistani Separatist was designated as a terrorist by the Indian Government in 2020. Nijjar was shot dead outside a gurdwara in June 2023.

A video is surfacing on social media in which members of the house can be seen observing silence for him. In the House of Commons, first Speaker Greg Fergus read out a condolence message about Nijjar and then asked all MPs to observe silence for him.

This development came to light at a time when there was hope of India-Canada relationship getting normal. Recently during G7 meeting in Italy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Canada PM Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of the summit.

This meeting, held during the G7 summit in Apulia, southern Italy, was the first meeting of India and Canada PMs amid tense diplomatic relations over pro-Khalistan extremism.

Who is Hardeep Singh Nijjar?

Hardeep Singh Nijjar was declared a terrorist by India, was shot dead outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia on June 18 last year. India had declared Nijjar a terrorist in 2020. The relationship between India and Canada was strained further when Justin Trudeau in the parliament accused the Indian government killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. In return, Indian Government had termed the allegations false, baseless and motivated by the politics.
